I am pleased to advise motorists are closer to experiencing more reliable journeys along Heathcote Road at Lucas Heights and Engadine, as part of the NSW Government’s $300 million Gateway to the South Pinch Points Program.

Work is progressing well at the intersection of Princes Highway and Heathcote Road at Engadine and Heathcote Road and New Illawarra Road at Lucas Heights.

These two major intersection improvements are set to ease congestion for motorists, improve travel times and reduce the number of crashes along this key southern road corridor.

Roads and Maritime Services started work in June and the two intersections are expected to be open to traffic by February, weather permitting.

To ensure the intersections are complete with a minimal impact on motorists, the community is advised work will continue during January and February to deliver the upgrades.

Since the most recent community update in October, work has continued on each of the intersections, including demolition and reconstruction of kerbs to help widen the road.

Work includes widening New Illawarra Road to provide additional right and left turn lanes for motorists turning onto Heathcote Road. Traffic lights will also be installed for left-turning traffic from New Illawarra Road, heading south towards Engadine.

This will help ease congestion for around 3,000 vehicles using the intersection every hour during the morning and afternoon peaks.

Improvements at the Heathcote Road and Princes Highway intersection will also help improve traffic flow, reliability and travel times.

More than 20,000 vehicles use this section of Heathcote Road, so Roads and Maritime is working to widen Heathcote Road on the approach to the Princes Highway to include two dedicated right turn lanes onto the highway, and a new shared through and right turning lane.

The improvements to these Heathcote Road intersections will help get traffic moving at two critical ‘pinch points’ so motorists can get to their destination sooner.

Work will be carried out until on weekdays between 7am and 6pm, between 8am and 1pm on Saturdays, and at night from 8pm to 5am from Sunday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Work will not take place from Monday 24 December 2018 to Sunday 6 January 2019, or on public holidays.

Temporary traffic changes will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists during the work, including lanes closures.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control.
