Children’s charity Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation has landed in the Illawarra, opening its first regional office and establishing a dedicated program for local children living in families affected by mental illness.
I am proud to see Kookaburra Kids launch their program in the Illawarra. Having had an involvement with the Foundation since its inception in the Sutherland Shire in 2002, it is great to see their continued success enabling them to help more children in our local areas. We are confident local community services will welcome and support this much needed specialised program by referring children.
This move will allow Kookaburra Kids to support the growing number of referrals the area, as well continuing to support families already in the program.
Kookaburra Kids program is the only service specifically developed for kids living in families affected by mental illness, providing respite, early intervention and mental health education through its weekend camps and school holiday activities – provided free to all program participants.
The expansion of the Kookaburra Kids program has been made possible by the funding received from Big Sister Foundation and St George Foundation – two organisations with strong ties to the St George, Sutherland and Illawarra regions. Heading up the South Coast office is local businesswoman, Amy Layton, who has taken on the role as South Coast Regional Officer.
