Local Firefighters and Firefighting teams were recognised for their bravery, hard work and exceptional service at award ceremonies held on St Florian’s Day, also known as international Firefighter’s Day, on Wednesday 4 May 2022.

St Florian’s Day is a day for everyone across NSW to recognise and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure our local community is protected from a range of risks and dangers.

Heathcote Firefighters and Firefighting teams recognised in St Florian’s Day awards:

  • Loftus 1 Bravo received Commissioner’s Citation for Service (Unit) for responding and providing assistance in challenging and traumatic circumstances when a NSW RFS tanker rolled over during the Black Summer bushfires.
  • Sutherland Strike Teams Alpha and Bravo received Commissioner’s Citation for Service (Unit) for providing assistance during the Black Summer bushfires, protecting life and property under horrific fire conditions.
  • Senior Firefighter Matthew Diegutis, member of Engadine Fire Station, received Commendation for Courageous Actions and Meritorious Service for responding to a house fire in Fairy Meadow last year, going above and beyond to conduct a successful search and rescue in hazardous conditions.

I commend members of Loftus 1 Bravo, Sutherland Strike Teams Alpha and Bravo and Senior Firefigher Diegutis. They have demonstrated exemplary community service and have gone above and beyond the call of duty. They are extremely deserving of this recognition and I thank them for their selfless service to the community.

They were part of just 64 volunteers, staff and teams from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW to be recognised with awards and commendations at the award ceremonies held at Sydney Olympic Park and the City of Sydney.
