LawAccess NSW is a free service that has helped over two million pepole with legal problems in NSW in the past 15 years. It is a great starting point for anyone in the Heathcote Electorate with a legal issue – the support they provide will cost you nothing and could save you a lot of time and anxiety.
Law Access has launched a Communications Toolkit to help people and organisations spread the word about its services, after Law and Justice Foundation research showed one in five people with a legal problem in NSW don’t do anything about it.
Many people don’t take action when they have a legal issue because they don’t know how to, or think it will be too stressful or expensive. Legal problems rarely resolve themselves and often get worse when ignored so it’s vital the Heathcote community knows about LawAccess and how to find its services.
The LawAccess phone line 1300 888 529 provides free legal information, referrals and – in some cases – legal advice on civil, criminal and family law issues.
Its website www.lawaccess.nsw.gov.au contains self-help information on a range of topics including debt, fines, family and neighbour disputes. It also has a guide to representing yourself in a court or tribunal.
LawAccess began in 2001 as a joint initiative of the Department of Justice, Legal Aid NSW, Law Society of NSW and the NSW Bar Association. A recent survey showed more than 90 per cent of LawAccess users were highly satisfied with the help they received.
